Peter Harvey - President

Peter Harvey

Peter has two children in their third year at Sun Haven Waldorf School – Molly in Grade 1 and Maggie in Grade 3. Peter and his wife, Valerie, enrolled their daughters in Sun Haven because they value the holistic approach to teaching a child, the teaching of reverence for the things around them, and learning in a collaborative environment.  Peter earned a B.Sc. C.I.S degree from DeVry (Phoenix, Arizona), and has completed many team and leadership courses. When time allows Peter can be found out on his boat, in his wood shop, walking, cycling or working on his oyster farm property on Sechelt Inlet.  Peter moved to Sandy Hook in 2005 and promptly involved himself in his community. Peter has sat on the board of directors of the Sandy Hook Community Association for many years and is excited to be spending time working with the Sun Haven Waldorf School Board for a second year.

Beth Hawthorn - Vice President

Beth Hawthorn

Beth moved to Roberts Creek in 2006 with husband, Robert, and two children, Leya and Marcel.  Both children are currently attending Sun Haven Waldorf School, in Grade 3 and Kindergarten, respectively. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University, and has been running a design business with Robert for 14 years.  Her work experience spans project management, event organization, marketing, graphic design, and exhibition coordination.  She has sat on the Sun Haven Marketing Committee for the past three years and assisted with the development of the new logo and marketing material. "A defining moment of my commitment to Waldorf Education was when I attended a 'Walk Through the Grades' session and saw the quality of work the grade students were doing.  I was incredibly impressed and knew that this was the right education for my children and family." She enjoys yoga, making toys and costumes for her children, gardening, and watching the seasons change.

Carl BrodieCarl Brodie - Treasurer

Carl is a father to two young children, one currently in the Grade 1 class. He moved to Roberts Creek in 2006, when they decided to move from Vancouver for a quieter and more healthy place to raise their children. Carl graduated from Trent University with an Honours BA and went on to study at the College Internationale de Philosophie in Paris.  Carl returned to Vancouver and taught English which led him to be a high school teacher in Japan and Hong Kong. Carl's love of business brought him into the financial field where he currently holds the Certified Financial Planner designation. "I first discovered a Waldorf Education attending a summer fair at Sun Haven. It was a magical experience and the children were all so well adjusted, kind and curious that I had to explore the school further. I offer the board my business experience and financial thinking."

RoseMarie Pearce - Director

RoseMarie Pierce

RoseMarie is the mother of 2 grown children (Amanda Lee [31], Melissa Ann [29]) who attended the Calgary Waldorf School for 9 and 11 years respectively. Ian Hunt - Director

Ian Hunt

Ian has been a Sunshine Coast resident for over 15 years, and has been involved with Sun Haven since its early days. His step-son Cyrus attended one of the initial classes, which provided Ian with the opportunity to witness first hand the wonder of Waldorf education.  “The spirit of Anthroposophy really resonated with my beliefs about life, human interaction, and the raising of children. I also fell in love with the sense of community that is fostered in the school. There is unique connection that comes from working together for a common goal.” His daughter Violet is currently attending Sun Haven in the Grade 2/3 class, and he is proud to watch her bloom in this nurturing environment. Ian is the owner of the Roberts Creek Health Food Store, and firmly believes that true health comes from our connection to the divine in the world within us and around us.

Testimonials

Love of Nature

My son's love of nature has only grown since joining Sun Haven Waldorf School for Kindergarten in 2008.  The fact that his sense of exploration of and curiosity about the natural world is not only encouraged, but appreciated by his classmates, only solidifies my resolve to expose him as long as possible to this education.  We also appreciate tremendously the fact that the school celebrates so many festivals from so many cultures.  And the fact the school is right across from the beach sure doesn't hurt!  Waldorf education has been such a valuable experience for both my son and the entire family - we wouldn't have it an other way.

We Made the Right Choice

It was a huge leap of faith for us to switch from public school to a Waldorf School, but after having both of our daughters at Sun Haven for more than a full year we know we made the right choice.  Our oldest daughter, Maggie, loves being part of a small class and feels that she’s part of a school community – both of these things have made a noticeable difference to her self confidence. Our youngest, Molly, came to the school brimming with self-confidence and we’re finding that it’s being channelled in a really positive way. Her natural creativity and energy isn’t being squashed - it’s being nurtured. These things matter a lot to us. We appreciate the way in which the Waldorf approach adapts to accommodate the individual strengths and personalities of our children.

Tuition Adjustment Support a Huge Value

Sun Haven Waldorf School has been very supportive of our family through the school's tuition adjustment program. I discovered the school when my family moved to the Sunshine Coast and at that time Sun Haven was not even on my radar, and I was not thinking about enrolling my children. Our goal was simply to get settled on the Coast and get our business transitioned from the city to the country. Once I discovered Sun Haven I knew it was an excellent fit for my children. The only challenge was that it was out of our budget at that time.  I was happy to learn about the school's tuition adjustment program, and in turn was able to begin envisioning a Waldorf Education for my children.  After receiving the reduced tuition for two years, and now that our family has better financial stability, we decided to give thanks to the school for their support, through a financial donation back. We could not have done it without this program.   Thank you Sun Haven!
