Waldorf Kindergarten children thrive on free play, circle games and fairy tales. The degree to which children can engage in creative, purposeful play and activities in early years directly influences their concentration, flexibility of thinking and lifelong love of learning. The Kindergarten at Sun Haven Waldorf School is busy with activity but unhurried as children follow the rhythm of the day. Watercolor painting, beeswax modeling, crafts and baking as well as other domestic activities, develop children's artistic and fine motor skills, while fairy tales, puppet plays and songs nourish their language development, self expression and feeling life.
Seasonal festivals and outdoor exploration cultivate a connection to the natural world and lay the groundwork for future scientific studies. The children's days are filled with both structured and unstructured activities that exercise their powers of imagination. They are also taught to play co-operative games, respect boundaries and follow directions. A sense of reverence and gratitude is woven through all of the daily experiences in a Waldorf Kindergarten.
Regular storytelling enhances a child's capacity to listen and comprehend. With attention to language, the Kindergarten teacher tells fairy tales and stories over and over and this is how the children strengthen their innate human capacity for forming inner pictures. This capacity, when properly nourished, becomes the basis for literacy and future critical thinking skills. By stimulating the imagination, cultivating a sense of wonder and developing an enthusiasm for work, the Waldorf Kindergarten prepares young children for intellectual learning in the years ahead.

Testimonials
It was a huge leap of faith for us to switch from public school to a Waldorf School, but after having both of our daughters at Sun Haven for a full year we know we made the right choice. Our oldest daughter, Maggie, loves being part of a small class and feels that she’s part of a school community – both of these things have made a noticeable difference to her self confidence. Our youngest, Molly, came to the school brimming with self-confidence and we’re finding that it’s being channelled in a really positive way. Her natural creativity and energy isn’t being squashed - it’s being nurtured. These things matter a lot to us. We appreciate the way in which the Waldorf approach adapts to accommodate the individual strengths and personalities of our children.
My son's love of nature has only grown since joining Sun Haven Waldorf School for kindergarten in 2008. The fact that the school encourages an exploration of and curiosity about the natural world only solidifies my resolve to expose him as long as possible to this education. And the fact the school is right across from the beach sure doesn't hurt!
