Aftercare Time Schedule
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:45 – 3:00 pm.
- Aftercare closes promptly at 3:00 pm. In case of an emergency, parents must call the school at 604.741.0949. A fee of $10 will be charged if children are collected after 3:15 pm.
- The Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Aftercare Program will not operate on school holidays or professional development days
Attendance
Parents are to pick-up their children in the Pre-Kindergarten fenced area at 3:00 pm. The Aftercare Teacher must be notified if someone other than usual will be collecting a child. All children need to be signed in and out of aftercare. Children arriving from the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten will be signed in by the Aftercare Teacher; any others must be signed in by their parent or guardian. All children need to be signed out by the pick-up person.
Lunch
Please provide a healthy lunch and snack for Aftercare. A healthy sandwich or left over supper with a piece of fruit or vegetable snack is ideal. Please do not send chips, cakes, sweets, chocolates, or fizzy drinks.
Aftercare Routine
Children in aftercare spend as much time as possible outside, playing in the forest, at the beach, in the sandbox, or the playground.
- 12:15 – 1:00 – Eat in the Kindergarten
- 1:00 – 2:00 – Rest time or quiet play typically in Kindergarten
- 2:00 – 2:30 – Artistic activity or outdoor play
- 2:30 – 3:00 – Outdoor play
Regular Attendance vs. Drop-in
Children thrive in an environment with established rhythms. If at all possible, parents should register for the program on set days so your child can become comfortable with which day(s) he/she attends school for the full day and also which playmates he/she can expect to see there.
We recognize that the unexpected does come up and welcome casual, drop-in attendance as long as space is available. For drop-in Aftercare we require 24 hours notice. Parents will need to complete the application form prior to sending their child to Aftercare and may want to do this in advance if they think drop-in may be needed. Then, when drop-in care is needed, a simple Request for Drop-in Aftercare can be completed – these forms can be picked up and dropped off outside the Kindergarten room. We can not accept children into the Aftercare Program for whom we do not have a complete registration.
Aftercare Fees
See our 2010 Fee Schedule and Calculator for current fees.
Subsidies
Families are encouraged to apply for the Childcare Subsidy from the Province of British Columbia. Once Sun Haven receives the subsidy money from the Ministry, the family will be refunded the applicable amount. Please submit your application as soon as possible, as there can be a delay in receiving the subsidy. You can download subsidy information from the Ministry of Children and Families website.
Medical
Should your child need to use any unexpected medication, please notify the Aftercare Teachers in writing. Please ensure that the time of dosage is indicated precisely. Any regular medications are to be noted on the Aftercare Registration Form.
Clothing
Children enrolled in the full day program will be spending time outside regardless of the weather. It is very important that the children are dressed warmly, with raingear, and have spare clothing, a pair of slippers, and a small blanket in their backpack. It is the responsibility of the child and parent to ensure that the child’s school bag, clothing and all other property are taken home every day.
Important
Please note that the Aftercare Program will be led by a substitute on one Thursday per month as the Afternoon teacher attends a meeting with Sun Haven’s other Early Childhood teachers.
Testimonials
It was a huge leap of faith for us to switch from public school to a Waldorf School, but after having both of our daughters at Sun Haven for a full year we know we made the right choice. Our oldest daughter, Maggie, loves being part of a small class and feels that she’s part of a school community – both of these things have made a noticeable difference to her self confidence. Our youngest, Molly, came to the school brimming with self-confidence and we’re finding that it’s being channelled in a really positive way. Her natural creativity and energy isn’t being squashed - it’s being nurtured. These things matter a lot to us. We appreciate the way in which the Waldorf approach adapts to accommodate the individual strengths and personalities of our children.
My son's love of nature has only grown since joining Sun Haven Waldorf School for kindergarten in 2008. The fact that the school encourages an exploration of and curiosity about the natural world only solidifies my resolve to expose him as long as possible to this education. And the fact the school is right across from the beach sure doesn't hurt!
