Parent Council Mandate

The Parent Council at Sun Haven presents parents with ongoing opportunities to become engaged in the school community through meaningful participation that enriches and strengthens the life of the school. All parents and guardians of students registered at the school are voting members of the Parent Council. The Parent Council is administered by a steering committee that is comprised of elected Co-chairs (preferably two co-chairs with staggered terms), a Vice-Chair, a Secretary and/or  Treasurer, a Class Representative from each grade including Kindergarten, as well as committee chairs (when applicable).  The Parent Council is mandated by the Sun Haven Educational Society.

The purpose of the Parent Council is:

1. To promote the education and welfare of students in the school.
2. To promote the interests of Waldorf education and, in particular, the interests of Sun Haven Waldorf School.
3. To assist parents in communications with the faculty, administration and board about their child's school experience or other concerns.
4. To encourage parent involvement in the school, and to support programs that promote parent involvement.
5. To support parents in their need to know about Waldorf education and the workings of the school through parent education.
6. To solicit regular feedback/input from parents and report findings to the board, faculty and administration.
7. To organize and support activities and social events for students and parents.
8. To contribute to a sense of community within the school and between the school, home, and neighbourhood.
9. To assist the administration and staff in ensuring the highest safety standards are maintained in the school and neighbourhood.
10. To provide financial support for the goals of the Parent Council, as determined by the membership.

The Parent Council actively participates in the following school committees:

• Parent Fund-raising Committee
• Social Committee
• Festivals and Events Committee
• Caregiver Committee
• Playground Committee
• Health & Safety Committee
• Adult Education Committee

Parents who are interested in learning more about the Parent Council at Sun Haven are welcome to attend a parent meeting or contact a member of the steering committee through the school office or website.  Meetings are held once a month and are announced in the school's weekly notice and on this website.
